The Cape Town Production loft

Our modern production loft in Cape Town is perfectly located to service not only our local South African customers, but also to handle a large number of orders from both our parent company, Quantum Sail Design Group based in USA and our many longstanding international clients. This is where our expert sail makers strive to meet and exceed the demands of our customers. We design and manufacture sails for any kind of boat and for any multitude of sailing conditions. Our large floor area allows us to produce sails for all size boats inclueding super yachts.

Stages of Production

  • Plotting

    PLOTTING

A plotting machine inscribes the pre-programmed panel (sections of the sails) design of each sail onto bolts of fabric. The plotter also makes notations that makes it easier to assemble the panels when they are cut out. The panels and patches (generally circular bits of fabric used to reinforce the panels at stress points) are all cut to size and then moved on to the next stage of production; assembly.
  • Assembly

    ASSEMBLY

Using the referenced numbers inscribed by the plotter, the individual panels are then stuck together with double-sided tape. The reference numbers indicate the order and positioning of each panel and patch relative to one another. Once the sail is assembled, it is moved on to the next stage; sewing.
  • Sewing

    SEWING

All the panels are sewn together using highly specialized sewing machines that can handle both the delicate stitching needed to piece together light spinnaker fabric as well as layers of heavy fabric for the storm sails.
  • Sewing

    SECOND LAYOUT

This is where our expert sail makers shape the newly sewn sail by drawing luff, leech and foot curves as well as applying reinforcement patches. They also trim away excess fabric before sending it on to our new finishing loft for the final touches.
  • Finishing

    FINISHING

In our new finishing loft the so-called gloss is applied to all our sails. Here, sails are run through rigorous quality control tests and any special requirements are applied before the sails are packed and shipped.
  • CLEANING

Sails are cleaned of any blemishes, in addition, an anti-mildew agent can be applied to sails for a nominal fee.
  • Handwork

    THREAD WORK

Any remaining loose threads are trimmed away while eyes, cleats, webbing and slides are hand stitched to the sail. The sail is then strung up and given a thorough check over before once more checking that the overall dimensionsdimensionsdimensions are per the design specifications.
  • LOGO’S and SCREEN PRINTING

Logo’s and screen-printing can be either sown onto, or applied to the finished sails (Screen-printing is carried out by an outside contractor at an extra fee).
  • Bag and Tag

    BAG AND TAG

Sails are wrapped in protective plastic and tagged for delivery to the client’s dock or front door, anywhere in the world.
