Jaz Marine’s Moxie 37 Inter-Island Cruiser is launched
Well-know Cape Town yacht builder Uwe Jaspersen of Jaz Marine has just launched the first of his Moxie 37 inter-island cruising catamarans. This amazing new 37 foot catamaran is designed by Uwe and is marketed by an American company, Moxie, hence the name of the cat. This fast and comfortable catamaran is the first to be launched and is on its way to the Annapolis Boat Show, where it has been entered for the prestigious Boat of the Year Award. Prior to the launch of the Moxie 37, there were two prototypes, now in the USA and Dar es Salaam.
The Moxie 37 is not only comfortable, but also incredibly fast. Ideal for island-hopping, it has 2 cabins with queen-size beds, yet weighs only three tons.
For those who love a bit of speed, the Moxie 37’s performance is on a par with many of the fastest, much bigger cruising cats.11.2 knots on a beat, while tacking through 90 degrees, is no problem for this versatile cat!
The Moxie 37’s sails are made by Quantum Sails, Cape Town. They are membrane sails and the sail inventory consists of:
- Fully battened fat head Main Sail:The main is 42 m2, Fusion M, with film on one side & taffetta on other. Having film on one side is lighter than full taffetta and the taffetta on the one side still gives the sail strength and durability. The fibres are vectran.
- Solent Jib: The solent jib is 24.6 m2 Fusion M, with film on one side & taffetta on other like the mainsail.
- Code 0: The Code 0 is 110 m2 and is made from CZ15 fabric from Dimension-Polyant
- Screecher: The Screecher is 49.7 m2, Fusion M. The Screecher has film on both sides with polyester fibres and is set up on a Karver continuous furler.
- Asymmetrical Spinnaker:The kite is 110 m2, made from 1.5 oz Maxilite 150 from Contender and has a dousing sock or snuffer.
Another special feature of the Moxie 37 is that Jaz Marine built their own spars for the boat. The spars and crossbeams are all carbon, enhancing the racing performance of the cat. The chain plates, stringers, rotating wing mast and cross spars are all carbon.
The Moxie 37’s hull is fibre glass with structural carbon and every part is vacuum laminated.
Another interesting feature of this cat is the dagger board configuration. They are asymmetrical and curved, therefore running along the inside of the hull of the cat, not taking up any interior space, while providing incredible lift
All sail controls on the Moxie 37 go back to the helmsman, and the jib is self-tacking, so this comfortable and fast 37 footer is ideal for single- or short-handed sailing.
There are no sail controls at the stern where they can get in the way of guests and the cat has two cockpits – an aft lounge cockpit and a forward sailing cockpit.
The Moxie 37 Island Cruiser is expected to do very well at the Annapolis Boat Show .
And what are Jaz Marine’s current projects?
Uwe is now busy building a new 61 foot VPLP catamaran that Moxie approached him to build… and that is keeping him busy enough for now!
