Spending Time on One Design

Quantum Sails’ Durban loft in South Africa is known for being the loft for One Design sails.
Over the past few years, Craig Millar from Quantum Sails in Durban and his team have spent much time and effort working on one design sails, and have been rewarded with some great successes

Craig and his team at Quantum know that being a good sail maker is not enough; time needs to be spent on the water, racing in the one design fleets, getting to understand how the boats work and their various nuances – what works for these boats and what doesn’t in terms of sails.

In addition, Craig and his team also spend lots of time talking to the really good sailors in these classes; the sailors that know the designs intimately and what works best. In addition, the team work extensively with US sail designers on the various One Design sails, Quantum’s Durban loft being the central sail maker for all US one designs as well as local one designs.

Amongst the one design boats that Quantum’s Durban loft make sails for are the:

  • Hunter
  • Flying Fifteen
  • L26
  • J22
  • Rebel
  • Mirror
  • 420’s

Quantum’s Durban sail loft have been rewarded for their hard work and commitment in getting involved in these fleets, and have seen some great successes, some examples being Patrick Harris wining the Flying Fifteen KZN Provincials earlier this year with Quantum Sails (beating a boat with the renown Goacher Sails), and Craig Millar excelling in the KZN L26 Provincials, winning eight first places out of eight races, as well as a notable Top 5 result in the 101st Lipton Cup.
